Chingis-Telsu Oil and Gas Site

Brief Overview

• The Chingis-Telsu field was discovered in 1969 when the first oil influx was obtained from the Chingis site. From that period, geological exploration was conducted until 2011.


• The site is located in the Karatobe district of the West Kazakhstan region of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 300-320 km southeast of the regional center, Uralsk, and 50 km east of the district center, Karatobe village. The eastern part of the site, covering 140 sq. km, is situated in the Aktobe region.


• The region is rich in oil and gas. The site borders the Koblandy field. To the east, there are promising oil and gas structures: Kubasay, Ushmola, and Ashibulak. To the northwest of the site, the largest oil and gas condensate fields, Chinarevskoye and Karachaganak, are located.

• Proven Oil Reserves (according to the State Balance):
  - 2.0 million tons of oil in C1 category;
  - 9.3 million tons of oil in C2 category.
  


• Exploration and Production Contract:
  Signed by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan on January 8, 2025, for a period of 6 years. After the exploration phase, a separate production contract will be signed for up to 25 years.


• Prospects for Expansion of the Extraction Area:
  The Geology Committee has granted a geological allocation for a contract area of 940.27 km², covering 488 blocks.


• Investments:
  $15 million has already been spent on exploration, including 2D seismic surveys across the entire site and 3D seismic surveys covering 77.4 km².

Exploration and
Well Stock

Exploration Activities:
• Seismic exploration works were carried out using 2D high-resolution seismic (MOGT) covering 1,203 km2 and 3D seismic covering 77.4 km2. These surveys aimed to provide a detailed study of the geological structure of the field and identify oil and gas prospects.


• 3D fieldwork was carried out by JSC "Azimut Energy Services" in 2000-2001. 2D fieldwork was conducted by LLP "Tat-Arka" in 2007-2008. Seismic data processing was performed at JSC "Geostan," and interpretation was done by LLP "Bereke Energy."


• As a result of the seismic exploration, a 3D time data cube and 2D time sections were obtained, interpreted, and used to create structural maps and isochron maps for reflective horizons III, V, VI, T2-1, T2-2, and T2-3 at a scale of 1:50,000. Detailed structural maps at a scale of 1:25,000 were also produced. Prospective oil and gas-bearing areas were identified, resource potential was assessed, and recommendations were made for further geological exploration of the identified sites.

Well Stock:
• The total number of drilled wells is 31, with a total length of 44,243m, of which 18 wells have been liquidated for geological reasons, 13 wells are in conservation.

Reserves and
Oil Properties

Hydrocarbon Reserves:
• Based on drilled wells, an assessment of the western reservoir was conducted, followed by an evaluation of the eastern reservoir based on operational reports on reserve growth.


• The following oil reserves are recorded in the State Balance of the Republic of Kazakhstan:
  Western Reservoir (according to the protocol of the State Committee on Geology of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 21.01.1992):
  C1 (1,462 / 366 thousand tons),
  C2 (9,274 / 2,318 thousand tons);
  
  Eastern Reservoir (according to the protocol of the State Reserves Commission of the Ministry of Geology of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 25.03.1996): C1 (59 / 18 thousand tons).

Oil Properties:
• Western Reservoir: light oil (0.81 g/cm³), low sulfur content (0.26%), paraffinic (7.3%), low resin content (3.6%), negligible asphaltene content (0.27%), oil content – 60%, viscosity – 7.5×10⁻⁶ m²/s. Paraffin melting point – 46°C. Content of light fractions boiling up to 200°C – 24%, up to 300°C – 45.5%. Pour point: -8 to -15°C.


• Eastern Reservoir: density – 0.864 g/cm³, low sulfur content (0.26%), paraffinic (3.2%), resin content – 4-11.6%, asphaltene content – 3.4%, viscosity – 20.9 mm²/s. Pour point: -30 to -35°C, paraffin melting point – 52.6°C. Content of light fractions boiling up to 200°C – 15%, up to 300°C – 42%.

Key Nearby Facilities

Infrastructure:
• At a distance of 430 km to the west, in the regional center of Aktobe, there are three oil refineries.
• 230 km to the northwest lies the "Orenburg - Western Border" gas pipeline.
• 150 km to the north is the Chingirlau railway station on the Moscow - Central Asia railway line.
• A gas processing plant is planned for construction in the neighboring Kubasay structure.
• Within the contract area, there are power supply points (RP-35/10), as well as sources of drinking and technical water supply.
• The road network in the work area consists of dirt roads suitable for vehicle movement.
